        Details

The Umutomboko Ceremony is a vibrant and historically significant annual traditional ceremony celebrated by the Lunda people of Luapula Province. Held at Mwansabombwe Village between Mwense town and Lake Mweru, this ceremony commemorates the Lunda tribe's migration from the Luba Kingdom in present-day Democratic Republic of Congo to Zambia during the 17th century. The word "Umutomboko" translates to “victory dance,” symbolizing the tribe’s triumph over challenges during their migration.

At the heart of this ceremony is Paramount Chief Mwata Kazembe, who leads the celebrations with reenactments of the Lunda’s historical victories. The chief dramatically crosses the Luapula River in a canoe, symbolizing the tribe’s final crossing into what is now Zambia. Once ashore, the chief performs a series of symbolic rituals, including sprinkling flour to honor the ancestors and to signify blessings for the land and the people.

One of the most captivating moments of the Umutomboko is the performance of the “mutomboko” dance, which the chief himself participates in. Dressed in full traditional regalia, including the leopard skin robe, Mwata Kazembe takes to the center stage, surrounded by dancers and drummers, who beat large traditional drums in rhythmic unison. This dance represents both the power and unity of the Lunda tribe, and their chief’s role as a protector and leader. The ceremony concludes when the Mwata is carried back to his fortress.

This cultural event is not only a traditional ceremony but also an educational experience for travelers. It offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Lunda traditions, including the tribe’s unique history, art forms, and spiritual practices. The vibrant costumes, energetic Lunda dance, performing traditional rituals and the royal pageantry of the event make it one of the most visually spectacular ceremonies in Zambia.
